New Collection of Latin American art in the MoMA, Through the Book, Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Supreme Court of Spain.

MoMa Latinamerican Collection, 2017
In November 2017, the MoMA Museum’s library acquired the exclusive limited edition book Bicentanario De La Constitucion del Tribunal Supremo del Reino De Espana. This book memorializes the graphic works of Ibero-American art and associated events, which were commissioned by the Spanish government to celebrate 200 Years of the High Supreme Court of Spain. The book was published in 2012 by Thomson Reuters Aranzadi. This book’s addition into the MoMa library collection followed the extensive efforts of Mrs. Myriam de Arteni, Senior Conservator for Exhibitions at the New York Public Library, an expert in Latin American art, Mr. Vicente Alcaraz García, curator of the Spanish government’s pertinent graphic Ibero-American artwork collection and Monica Sarmiento Castillo Co / curator and coordinator of this project. The generosity of philanthropist Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, who focuses on Latin American modernist art, is gratefully acknowledged. In addition, the assistance of Sandy Sumano, the endowed Patricia Phelps de CisnerosBibliographer for Latin America at MoMA, and of Don Archer, Director of the MOCA Museum of Computer Art and donor of the book, are gratefully acknowledged. “The commemorative book of the 200th anniversary of the Supreme Court is not a memory, it is a jewel,” said the president of the Supreme Court of Spain.More generally, the relatively recent increase in the recognition and representation of Latin American art at the MoMA can be attributed to the productive collaboration, begun in 1994, between MoMA Director Glenn Lowry and philanthropist Patricia Phelps de Cisneros.
